Trucking executives express their greatest concerns

The state of the economy is on almost everyone's mind, including executives in the trucking industry.

According to the American Transportation Research Institute, a nonprofit firm that studies the industry, the economy was the biggest concern for executives in the trucking sector. It was followed by the new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 and government regulation in general.

And while many industries are seeing an influx of employment applications as the country's jobless rate is near double digits, trucking executives said finding enough drivers is one of the top ten concerns for the trucking industry.

The annual survey was commissioned by the American Trucking Associations and revealed during one of its recent conferences. Bill Graves, ATA president and chief executive officer, said the industry has to keep tabs on the issues that may have an impact on their business.

"Not only must we be prepared to support initiatives that are based on well-founded research and thought, but we must also be ready to vigorously debate initiatives which lack research and practicality," Graves said.

Some experts feel as though the trucking industry should see improvement next year, as manufacturing continues to grow in the U.S.
