Richardson's freight legislation gets backing of American Trucking Association

Representative Laura Richardson recently introduced a piece of legislation to the House of Representatives with the goal of improving freight planning and funding for transportation projects.

The Freight is the Future of Commerce in the United States Act of 2010 would create a new office within the Department of Transportation that would deal specifically with planning regarding travel corridors with national significance. It would also set up the National Freight Advisory Committee, which would give private trucking companies a way to provide input on how funds should be allocated.

"For decades the needs of our freight system have been ignored and we need to act now in a comprehensive way to fix its failings," Richardson, a California lawmaker, said.

The American Trucking Associations said it is throwing its support behind the Freight FOCUS Act. Bill Graves, president and CEO of the organization, said passing the bill would address bottlenecks on some of the country's most vital roadways.

"These chokepoints cost the trucking industry tens of billions of dollars each year, and force trucks to waste a tremendous amount of fuel," Graves said.
