More trucking companies enforcing cell phone restrictions

An increasing number of commercial truck operators are adopting rules that relate to truckers' ability to use cellphones when they're behind the wheel.

According to software provider ZoomSafer, the number of commercial fleet operators that have written up policies in the past nine months that pertain to cell phone use has risen from 62 percent in May of last year to 81 percent in February 2012.

In addition to more commercial truck operators adopting certain cellphone rules, the number of companies who say they are enforcing these rules has risen as well, jumping from 53 percent in May to 90 percent in February.

Trucking industry insiders say that the increased focus fleet operators are putting on cellphone use likely stems from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's new rule regarding truckers inability to use cellphones behind the wheel.

The poll also detailed the way in which fleet operators are enforcing their cellphone bans, including through random safety audits and peer reporting.

Furthermore, the survey found that more than one in four fleet managers plan on performing additional investigations into whether their employees are adhering to the ban within the next 12 months.
