FMCSA announced safety grants in Kansas
Federal officials have announced more than $5 million in grants to improve safety for truckers and commercial bus drivers in Kansas.
The largest grant - more than $3.9 million - will go to the Kansas Highway Patrol, to improve safety enforcement through safety audits for newer motor carriers, as well as additional inspections of vehicles carrying hazardous materials.
The KHP will also use funding to extend its reach into local schools to reinforce safe driving among teens.
"Safety is our highest priority," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "These grants support our Kansas partners as they ramp up truck and bus safety enforcement and educational efforts to encourage teens and all drivers to share the road safely - every trip, every time."
The government is also awarding a grant of more than $1.1 million to the Kansas Department of Revenue, which will allow the state to implement a system to detect commercial driver's license fraud, which should provide reassurance to carriers that drivers they hire are properly trained and won't cause insurance claims because they weren't qualified.
