BTS freight index sees slight decline in August
Freight transportation saw a slight decline, according to a recent report from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The amount of freight seen by truckers and other transporters fell 0.6 percent in August when compared to levels seen in July. However, the BTS' Freight Transportation Services Index has seen a rise of 4.4 percent of the previous 15 months.
Prior to that 15-month span, freight transportation had declined 15.3 percent since August 2008.
"The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton-miles, which are then combined into one index," the BTS said.
August's rating of 97.6 is 4.4 percent higher than was seen in May 2009, which reached a low not seen since June 1997. However, freight transportation is 13.5 percent below an all-time high achieved in May 2006.
A recent report from FTR Associates noted the trucking industry saw continued improvement in August, which was the sixth-straight month it experienced growth. The organization indicated that next year should see continued increases, as the manufacturing sector continues to experience positive gains.
